Salt addiction?

By Lynette Simango

I used to love salt, like plenty of it and I would always assume they were little or no salt in my food and would add some before I tasted it. One day mama watched me grab the salt shaker from the table and added to the food she knew very well was a bit salty for someone in their right mind to add extra salt. I continued with my meal but there was that feeling that someone was watching me and I was right, she just froze right there. Afterward, she then asked me to pass her my plate which I did hesitantly. Upon tasting my food, she needed not to go past one bite because it was too salty to be edible. On that very day, she forbade me to ever use the salt shaker again because she said it wasn’t healthy. Well you know, mothers know best but did I listen?

I started adding salt from the kitchen and because I never touched the salt shaker again, mama was proud. Little did she know nothing had changed. It was on this day that I read an article about the negative effects of salt that I realized I was going down a dangerous path and had to change. Though the journey was hard, the thought of having my life shortened because of salt scared the hell out of me and it was at that moment that I realized my salt addiction had to stop.  The equation was just simple๐Ÿ‘‡

Too much salt consumption- Kidney failure to eliminate salt- Body tries to dilute it by adding water – Increased blood volume & retention of fluid.

Which equaled to

Short-term effects ๐Ÿ‘‰ excess thirst, bloating & BP rise

Long-term effects ๐Ÿ‘‰ High blood pressure, Heart disease, Stroke, Kidney disease, Kidney stones

So if no one can convince you to stop taking too much salt in your diet, this information will because it changed me.
